A unique tribute to art films as seen through the eyes of master cinematographer Vittorio Storaro, the winner of three Academy Awards.

The volume is a compendium of Storaro's extraordinary fifty-year career and a tribute to the creative sources of his work, as celebrated through more than 500 illustrations that reflect his singular style.

In cinematography, there is not just one kind of light, but an infinite range of variants not only the day and night specified in the screenplays, but also the daylight and artificial light, the darkness and the twilight, the sunrise and the sunset, the sun and the moon. And each one tells a story, expresses an idea or an emotion, and digs down into the subconscious. "The Muses" are the female figures of Greek mythology who have inspired the cinematography of Storaro in terms of aesthetics, light, color, and value.

What Is Life? With Mind and Matter and Autobiographical Sketches Audible Audio Edition Erwin Schrödinger Roger Penrose foreword Bob Souer Tantor Audio Books Reviews

  • Well worth reading, a bit of a scientific classic. It is interesting to see how much was known and speculated about the likely nature of the carrier of genetic information, even before DNA was discovered. The author also has some interesting philosophical and religious speculations, though he remains grounded in the scientific consensus of the day, for the most part. This relatively short and inexpensive book should become part of any scientifically literate person's background reading, IMHO.
  • In this review the focus is on Schrodinger's influence in bringing together physics and biology, which continues today. In effect he indirectly encourages such things as current genetics and neurology, which can be seen in the work of researchers like James D. Watson, the co-discoverer of the double helix orientation of DNA, and also the cutting edge neurological work of Antonio Damasio and embodied cognitive science. As in Schrodinger, they inevitably end up in the next stage after physics and biology coalesce, which is to say, cultural and ethical territory. Any reader of What is Life? can see this coming. Schrodinger is still good reading today in diverse interdisciplinary fields. He was indeed a man far ahead of his time.
  • He goes to great length to look at the atoms and molecules of DNA and builds an argument statistically about them and how they build the genome,
but it's hard for a lay person to understand. It seems like they violate the rules of chance but I'm not sure. It almost seems like he isn't sure either. I will have to go back and read it again because often my mind and eyes just glaze over.
It's a hard read but worth it to get a physicists perspective on a deeply philosophical subject.

Schrodinger's cat in Wikipedia is a good read about his mind.
  • Schrödinger's What is Life? Is a classic. In spite of the new advancements in genetics that supersede some of the notions addressed, this book remains fundamental to science and for anyone with an interest in biology, physics and chemistry.

Published in 1944, nine years before the discovery of the structure of DNA, this book was written after a series of lectures given by Erwin Schrödinger. It is intended to the general reader, as it offers detailed explanation of the topics, however, it must be read carefully because of the complexity of the issues. Schrödinger answers the question of how can physics and chemistry explain the events that take place in living organisms. As a physicist's he is very humble, given that he is approaching a topic outside of his expertise area, however his insight is brilliant. He makes a theoretical prediction and based on sound arguments he proposes an "aperiodic crystal" that contains genetic information.

This reprint edition is completed with a nice preface by physicist Roger Penrose, but the highlight is the accompanying text Mind and Matter, also by Schrödinger. This offers a great finale, with a philosophical discourse dealing with consciousness, free will and determinism.
  • This is another great work of Erwin Schrodinger which gives an insight into the biology of life from a physicist's perspective that inspired scientists like; Francis Crick who discovered the structure of DNA, J.B.S. Haldane, and Roger Penrose. It is clear from this work and other books of Schrodinger that he was one of the few physicists who deeply thought of the inner most secrets of life. This book is divided into two parts What's Life (7 chapters) and Mind and Matter (6 chapters).

The physicist's most dreaded weapon, the mathematical deduction can not be used for life because it is too complex to be accessible to equations. The orderliness required for the preservation of life does not come by the random heat motions of atoms and molecules, but statistical averages that provide order. Schrodinger asks a simple question; why is life made of so many atoms and not just a few. He offers three examples; higher magnetic fields, increase in molecular population and the error introduced into a reaction rate constant or any other physical parameter would be far too great if only few molecules are involved to form life. Hence orderliness, and of course evolution and diversity of life, requires very large population of molecules.

The world is a construct of our sensations, perceptions, memories; all existing objectively and all scientific knowledge is based on sense of perception and nonetheless the scientific views of material processes formed in this way lack all sensual qualities and can not account for the latter. Theories that are developed from scientific observations of experiments never account for sensual qualities. The sentient, percipient and thinking ego does not figure anywhere in our world picture, because it is itself the world picture. It is identified with the whole and not part of it. The physical world lacks all the sensual qualities that go to make the subject of cognizance. It is colorless, soundless, and impalpable. The world is deprived of everything that makes sense in its in relation to the consciously contemplating, perceiving, and feeling the subject; no personal god can form part of world model that has only became accessible at the cost of removing everything personal from it. God is missing from spacetime picture like sense of perception or ones own personality. Upanisads (Hindu Scripture) states that Atman = Brahman, the personal self equal the all comprehending eternal self. Consciousness never experienced in plural only in the singular, and plurality is merely a series of different aspect of one soul and one conscious produced by a deception (Maya). There is no multiplicity of minds; in reality and truth there is only one mind.

Before and after is not a quality of the world we perceive but pertains to the perceiving mind and don't imply the notion of space and time. After relativity, the notion of before and after reside on the cause and effect relationship. The general directedness of all happenings is explained by the mechanical or statistical theory of heat. The Second Law of Thermodynamics states that order changes to disorder but not disorder to order, and time travels in one direction from past to future, but not future to past. The statistical theory of time has a stronger bearing on the philosophy of time than theory of relativity. The latter presupposes unidirectional flow of time while statistical theory constructs from order of events.

My body functions according to laws of nature, but I direct body motions. The word "I" means to state that I who control the motion of the atoms and molecules according to the Laws of Nature. The uncertainty principle and the lack of causal connection in nature introduce certain features into physical reality. For example, we can not make any factual statement about a physical system without interacting with it which would change the physical state of the system. This explains why no complete description of any physical object is ever possible. These laws have pushed the boundary between the subject and object. In fact subject and object are only one, and no barrier exists. It is the same element that goes to compose my mind and the world. The situation is the same for every mind and its world, in spite of the unfathomable abundance of cross references between them. The world is given to me only once, not one existing and one perceived.

The last chapter gives brief autobiographical sketches of Schrodinger translated by his granddaughter. Schrödinger was deeply philosophical with strong family He loved and respected his parents. His strong interest in physics and Vedanta philosophy (one of the six schools of Hindu Philosophy) is apparent, but he shy's away from writing about his complex personal life that involved many women and numerous extramarital affairs.

There's no place like home....

Kim and Julian Taylor are in the market for their first home, and a visit to the secluded Beacon estate finds them enamored. It's a peculiar home, rather large and in need of some renovations. The price is right, however, and after a tour, they snap the house up without hesitation.

The man who sells them the house has one last detail to share before they sign on the dotted line. The previous owners of the home disappeared under mysterious circumstances nearly eight years ago and have recently been declared dead in absentia. Unperturbed by this fact, Kim and Julian set about making the home their own.

It quickly becomes clear that the two of them are not alone there, however.

This volume contains all four installments of the serialized novel Black Acres In Absentia, The Borderland, The Amber Light, and In Darkness. It also contains a brief preface by the author.

"Although I read a lot I rarely write reviews. A book has to be really good or really bad to prompt me to write a review. This book was REALLY GOOD. Scary without being gory. Very scary as a matter of fact. I told my husband I would never read it if he was going to be out of town. The only thing I can say that might be construed as a negative is the author's use of some words which, in some cases, I do not feel were used correctly in the sentences they appeared and in other cases I felt they did not flow with the rest of the writing style. However, this did not prevent my overall enjoyment of the book nor would it prevent me from reading other books by this author."

Black Acres The Complete Collection Audible Audio Edition Ambrose Ibsen Joe Hempel Books Reviews

  • Repetative. Unlikable protagonists. 2 stars because I skimmed through to the end, but it took awhile, had to keep putting it down because the characters kept doing ridiculous things. "We have to leave, there's something horrible happening in this house! " 10 minutes later, some character - "This house is fine, I'm very comfortable here." Ugh.
  • The premise for this book is good, but the way the story is told makes it tedious reading. The author tells the story of the strange happenings at Kim and Julian's new house through Kim's thoughts. The author tells the reader what Kim is thinking, page after page after page, over and over and over. Occasionally something happens. Kim screams, husband Julian comes running, and Julian explains it away with logic. He doesn't believe her, so eventually she stops telling him things. Then one day Kim freaks out and wants to leave. He agrees to take her away from the house so they can discuss it. Of course, the car won't start. Instead of calling for help, they stay in the house, have dinner, watch a movie, and fall asleep on the couch. When she awakens in the middle of the night, she starts wandering through the house. Really? Spoiler alert The bad thing is upstairs. Julian awakes to Kim's screaming and finds her unquestionably dead in a closet. He goes downstairs to get the phone to call for help, but when he gets back upstairs, the body is gone. At this point, he hangs up on the dispatcher. Again, really?! The rest of the story involves Julian's thoughts, page after page after page, as he searches for his wife. Is she alive? Dead? At no point does he try to leave or get help from the authorities. The ending is predictable. These characters are unsympathetic and not very smart. Things happened that were supposed to be scary, but they just made me laugh. This book is poorly written and ridiculous.
  • The writer does a very good job building suspense, but then does little with it. My first question is, why are these two people, the main characters, married? They don't seem to particularly like each other. She refers to him as a bully, and he is very condescending toward her. How could the old man possibly be an apparition? He drives a pickup. What is the signifigance of the white masks? They're mentioned several times. What, exactly, was Dakota's baby, and where did it come from? Why is Dakota always naked? There are too many loose ends--I kept reading, almost all night, and got very few answers. There are some very poignant moments, however, when the old couple are waiting for their 'child' to come home. The writer shines in those scenes. It is too bad the main characters weren"t more likable--their lack of a personal connection with each other detracts from the story.
  • Although I read a lot I rarely write reviews. However, this did not prevent my overall enjoyment of the book nor would it prevent me from reading other books by this author.
  • One of the best in the horror genre that I've read in quite a long time. I'm rather a veteran of the genre, and it takes a lot to spook me. This one certainly did. I have some minor quibbles with the main characters - I would have preferred to like them more, greater pathos. Regardless ... Excellent read!
  • The concept is good and interesting but the plot was not well de developed it listed the trail at some points and the end felt hurried, there are some details that are not answered.
  • I enjoyed getting to know the characters, and the supernatural twist. I don't really enjoy malformed creatures in books. It is hard to picture them in my mind.
  • Some scarry parts worth reading. I would have liked it to move faster, but it really painted an eerie picture!

A unique recovery program created by one of the world's leading on-line authorities on Narcissistic Abuse.

Narcissistic abuse was originally defined as a specific form of emotional abuse of children by narcissistic parents, but more recently the term has been applied more broadly to refer to any abuse by a narcissist (someone that who admires their own attributes), in particular in adult-to-adult relationships the abuse may be mental, physical, financial, spiritual or sexual. If you have been through an abusive relationship with someone who has Narcissistic Personality Disorder, you will know that no one understands what you are going through unless they have personally experienced it. Melanie Tonia Evans was abused by her former husband for over five years, it almost took her to the point of no return, at her lowest point she had an epiphany that signified the birth of the Quanta Freedom Healing Technique. In this book you will learn how to recognize if you are in an abusive relationship, how to detach remove yourself from the narcissist's ability to affect or abuse you any more, identify your subconscious program, release it and replace it focus on healing yourself, become empowered, thrive and not just survive. This revolutionary program is designed to heal you from the inside out, and its effectiveness has been proven by thousands of people worldwide.

"I really enjoy the approach to healing laid out in this book. A lot of support groups I have been in seem to hold a lot of anger, bitterness and resentment and encourage the use of those emotions to fuel themselves through life, rather than heal.

I particularly love the forgiveness work in exercise 3, as to my mind this is incredibly valuable.

Overall I found the exercises in the narp program too long too commit to, however I've found the book and the layout of the exercises in this manner much easier to commit to.

I love the supportive work MTE does. Her videos have kept me company on many long lonely anger filled nights. I can't begin to explain how important her work is for people needing to make sense of narcissistic abuse."

  • As an extremely successful and respected professional, I found myself in the middle of a relationship that I wanted to leave but did not understand why I could not find the strength to let go. I knew intellectually that this was wrong, it was not okay but it seemed like talking to people did not help me and when I was pressing charges for the physical abuse part, the ladies in the prosecutors office explained how strong I was, that this phenomenon of women going back to the abuser is just on repeat and no one understands. I felt this burning in my heart that God was telling me to speak and have a voice and stand up for this so I searched for anything that existed to help me stop this madness. I found Melanie. I bought her NARP program and began doing the modules that help you visualize the healing, and they work. This book is so simply made that anyone, even without any energy to do anything else and who feel like they may just want to give up can do. You can do this! And you can get results. When I started this program, I traveled often and found that professional women all over the United States are going through what you and I have and are dealing with. When I had a massage in Montana, the woman opened up and shared that her husband was abusive. A mother at the pool in DC asked me what I was listening to and when I told her she shared that her daughter was there with her because her husband would not permit her to have her parents at her home, could I talk to her. In Vegas a dealer explained all the women who are in there with these rich men who treat them sooooo poorly. The prosecutor's office. The OB-GYN. All of them I gave the Melanie Tonia Evans sites to give to women, and men, to get something that works! Every one of these people told me they found relief and understanding from this program. All got back to me without my asking, saying thank you for this. Most paid for the NARP program once they read and understood that this is what the "there has to be something to help me stop - or make this stop and let me live again" answer is. For me, I keep running into people who just open up about being abused and I keep telling them about Melanie. I want you to feel better, too. This Narcissism won't go away, but we can heal and protect ourselves from it. You can let go of feeling like you can't live without them and you an afford the life that you want. She will help.
  • Mélanie Tonia Evans YouTube videos have been a vital tool in my discovery of the impact of the narcissists behavior on my family and myself.
She is clearly one of few experts and sharing her and others experiences is a gift.
Her book is a step by step way to understanding the narcissist (or as much as possible), to understand why we put ourselves in that position and how to acknowledge and « thrive » to our full potential .
She gave an significant amount of free material over the years in the form of all possible medias and this book shares it all in a form that you can always access when you need until you are back to life, and when experiencing narcissism is only a fairway memory. I would only recommend.
  • Melanie Tonia Evans has successfully created a safe, healing space for those people effected by Narcissistic Personality Disorder. The abuse that others are subjected to over time can cause a myriad of diseases and syndromes along with guilt, shame and anxiety. This topic has in recent times come to light and many people are healing. However, due to the nature of this confusing, covert and most times subtle issue, the types of healings are not always correct or helpful. Melanie Tonia Evans’s book, YOU CAN THRIVE AFTER NARCISSTIC ABUSE, is the Bible on this topic to me! She teaches you to heal inner trauma so as to stop and end the reaction to the abuse. In other words, the victim concentrates on the parts of themselves that initially got them stuck in the quagmire of narcissistic abuse from the onset. In her book you learn why typical therapy modalities do not work on this type of abuse. I highly recommend this book FIRST before all others. Thank you, Melanie, for your courage, your kindness and empathy, your knowledge, experience and transparency, and especially thank you for being approachable to people! May the help and love you have given come back to you a thousand times! Thank you for a most outstanding book too!!
  • This book speaks healing from the voice of experience. It is very well written, practical, and truthful. I am very grateful for Melanie Tonia Evans and the NARP program. This book will go on to be legendary and is available in an audible version which I will get also. Thanks Melanie!!!!!! xxx
  • I really enjoy the approach to healing laid out in this book. A lot of support groups I have been in seem to hold a lot of anger, bitterness and resentment and encourage the use of those emotions to fuel themselves through life, rather than heal.

  • I highly recommend this book if someone is being bullied by a narcissist. I have received free emails and videos from Melanie Tonia Evans for a couple of years, and her insights and support are extremely helpful. I had previously read "Biology of Belief", discussed in her book, which I also recommend. I hope everyone finds healing from past toxic events and freedom to reach a fulfilling potential in interdependent and loving relationships, and for suffering parents to break a cycle of abuse.

An eighteen-year-old woman named Franca Viola made history in 1966 as one of the first “#metoo” heroines of modern times, when she refused to go along with a centuries-old forcible marriage custom in Sicily. Having endured kidnap and rape, she publicly defied the expectation that she would marry the rapist to “restore her broken honor.” A social uproar occurred throughout the island ― and beyond.

In Natalie Galli’s The Girl Who Said No, Viola’s remarkable story unfolds when the author arrives in Palermo to search for this brave heroine, with little more than the memory of a tiny article she had spotted two decades prior. Galli wanted to know whatever had become of this courageous girl who had overturned an ancient, entrenched tradition?

The riveting events after Franca pressed charges with the police form the core of this gripping memoir. Viola was subjected to public taunting whenever she appeared on the streets of her town; Mafia-orchestrated bullying threatened her entire family. Galli traced the dramatic tale to its conclusion, in spite of initial warnings from her own relatives not to break the Sicilian code of silence.

Throughout her search for the enigmatic Franca, Galli shares her own poignant and hilarious observations about a vibrant culture steeped in contradictions and paradoxes. Does she succeed in locating the elusive proto-feminist whose case forever changed Italian culture and history? Travel along on Galli’s engaging odyssey to find out.

"In between the lines of this enchanting, refined portrait of Italy’s enigmatic three-cornered island, I discovered healing answers to haunting questions of my own Sicilian heritage. I virtually tasted my roots, and the cannolis, through Galli's evocative prose. Yet the most profound gift was finding a sister in the courageous Franca Viola, who made history in 1966 when, after enduring kidnap and rape, she refused to go along with the centuries-old custom of forcible marriage to the perpetrator. The “no” spoken by Viola echoes in the heart as a most significant turning point in world history, and will surely remind us of the exquisite joy in our own personal turning point marked by the use of the word, or perhaps shed light on the necessity to take the blissful step of standing up to any reflection of ourself who sees another as less than, for this is the sole portal to knowing loving union in human life. "The Girl Who Said No" is a work of world-class journalism and literature that inspires readers to challenge culturally conditioned notions of fate so they too may realize the true love that is their birthright and destiny. Galli's painstaking journey to unearth the story behind Viola's "no" is just as astonishing as the story itself—the potent combination of these inextricably interwoven tales leaves the heart in a state of utter "yes.""

If Vasily Grossman's 1961 masterpiece, Life and Fate, had been published during his lifetime, it would have reached the world together with Pasternak's Doctor Zhivago and before Solzhenitsyn's Gulag. But Life and Fate was seized by the Russian KGB. When it emerged posthumously, decades later, it was recognized as the War and Peace of the 20th century.

Always at the epicenter of events, Grossman (1905-1964) was among the first to describe the Holocaust and the Ukrainian famine. His 1944 article "The Hell of Treblinka" became evidence at the Nuremberg trials. Grossman's powerful anti-totalitarian works liken the Nazis' crimes against humanity with those of Stalin.

We are only now able to examine Grossman's prose, which has the everlasting quality of great art, as well as his life and legacy, which Popoff's authoritative biography illuminates.

"A book that is as valuable as a warning of current political trends in Russia under Putin as it is a biography of a writer of the last century little known to most Americans (including me).

While the life of Vasily Grossman is definitively set out here, the details of that life are somewhat elusive given the chaos of the times he lived in and the state suppression he was subject to. What is clear is the courage Grossman exhibited in reporting during World War II and his writings on the striking similarities between the dehumanizing actions of the totalitarian states represented by the USSR and Nazi Germany. Jews and kulaks were both targeted: Truth was not valued under either system.

The tortured story of how the Kremlin delayed, edited, and in all other manner of ways made publishing difficult or impossible for this author is alone worth reading.

The paramount dignity of the individual was an idea championed by Vasily Grossman. Of this writer, Alexandra Popoff has written a fine biography."

  • Very informative book. I like that it has recipes for not only making sushi rice but also recipes for sushi quinoa. Has recipes for many different sauces. Includes good illustrations with each recipe and a large variety of recipes. The rice recipe assumes that you are using a rice cooker, which is no big deal, I just checked the time on the rice bag, worked well for me. I like the variety of recipes and can't wait to try them. Very informative and a good book for beginners in my opinion.
  • Made sushi for the first time and it was completely edible. I'm so excited to try all the recipes.
The book is beyond easy to understand and they even dedicate the beginning of the book explaining what is what.
  • With this book, Baggett takes what could be a difficult culinary concept and makes it simple to understand. The visuals and brief descriptions of sushi ingredients were especially helpful. I like that alternative ingredients like quinoa and brown rice sushi are also discussed. And mostly... I'm looking forward to trying the wasabi deviled eggs - yum!
  • This book is for those that fear sushi and also for those that already love sushi. Great ideas and techniques to get you motivated enough to make your own at home.
  • So excited to try out different recipes. The food pictures makes me want to go out and grab some. Really great pictures, very vivid and interesting.
  • So much more than sushi rolls! Wonderfully crafted dishes that I can't wait to try. Loaded with photos. Love it.
  • Beautiful book, and the recipes look like they'll be delicious.
  • Bought as a present and they loved it! Good informative book!

Moneyball The Art of Winning an Unfair Game Michael Lewis Books Reviews

  • Read this book only if you are prepared to realize that much of what you thought you knew about baseball is nonsense. This book is an amazing eye-opener about a then radical new way of managing a pro baseball team that allowed the dirt-poor Oakland A's to win as many games as the fat-cat NY Yankees. Using detailed statistical analysis created by baseball fans like Bill James who wanted to know how to make better teams in their fantasy baseball leagues, Oakland GM Billy Beane drafted or traded for players other teams considered sub-standard or worn-out and Oakland became a post-season threat despite having the second lowest payroll in the major leagues. Although the baseball establishment reacted with horror and contempt to having its time-honored methods of choosing players challenged, the approach used in Moneyball has been widely adopted by many teams including the Boston Red Sox who won the World Series shortly after doing so. Since reading this book I laugh every time I hear an announcer use the phrase, "productive out", knowing that over the long haul it's teams that don't trade outs for bases that win more games. The Moneyball approach remains controversial with many fans and baseball industry insiders--it's more fun to watch someone bunt a runner to second than it is to watch that hitter draw a walk--but the numbers show that over time the walks are more valuable to a team. Regardless of how much you agree with Bill James and Billy Beane, this is a terrific book that will make you really think about how the game of baseball works.
  • Terrific read. For some reason, I didn't read it until 2016. It has a different perspective now after 13 years. We have already seen the affects of Moneyball and Sabermetrics on baseball. Theo Epstein seems to be the greatest beneficiary of the theory, the man who used sabermetrics and had a budget to spend. Two World Series victories, one for the Red Sox and another for the Cubs after many decades of losing. The Cubs didn't win the World Series in 2016; Theo Epstein was the winner. I liked reading Moneyball to follow the theories and careers of those who were the big players in the book. The afterward by Lewis gives a lot of insight into the reaction of baseball's old boy network, the old guard who rejected change.
  • I decided to read this book after I got a nagging feeling that I am the only statistician in the US who hasn't read it. This review is aimed at those who are interested in quantitative performance evaluation or quantitative modeling in general.

First, I'd like to thank Lewis for a book that is worth reading even for someone who has never learned the rules of the game and never will. Even if I had had a glimmer of interest in baseball per se before I read the book, it would have been extinguished for good anyway (read on to learn why).

According to Lewis, for about a hundred years American baseball existed as a peculiar social club composed of GMs, scouts, baseball writers and commentators, and players who would often become one of the former. The first reason why The Club was special was that it was rarely run as a business. Consider Walter Haas, a former owner of Oakland Athletics. Haas was a great-grandnephew of Levi Strauss and coincidentally served as CEO of Levi Strauss & Co for almost 20 years. He was not shy of giving it back to the American society or at least to the most indispensable part of it, professional baseball players. As a result, in 1991 Oakland A's enjoyed the highest payroll in baseball while losing money for the owner. Unfortunately, that commendable manifestation of social responsibility was halted in 1995 when the new owners switched to a pro-business stance and slashed the payroll drastically.

The new goal for the GM became to keep the team in the major league, while minimizing the ratio of payroll to the number of wins. The quest for how to run the most cost-effective team resulted in a number of fascinating discoveries. First, consider the process of drafting young players from high schools and colleges. The old scouts were used to some glaringly subjective player selection criteria, such as how cool the player's body looks ("selling jeans") or how concordant his facial features are with a great future in baseball ("The Good Face"). The "internal compass of an old baseball guy", directed them to look at the player and "imagine what he might become". They believed that they could judge and predict the player's performance simply by watching him. To be fair, the old school scouting worked fine but only assuming that the team's pockets were very deep. Indeed, that was often the case thanks to Walter Haas and other individuals who possessed similar amounts of wealth and social responsibility.

Of course, different stats (foot speed, batting average, etc) were also considered, but none of the old guard had the desire, ability or means to assess how predictable such metrics are given the current information about the player. For instance, do young power hitters tend to develop precision over time or not? Are the stats of a high school player informative enough or does it make sense to ignore them and focus on the college players who have a longer history? Are there metrics that confuse skill and luck and contain no useful information even about the past performance, let alone the future?

Further, suppose the future values of a measurable characteristic (e.g. foot speed, fastball velocity) can be predicted well, and we are fairly certain that luck and skill are not mixed up. So far so good, but exactly how much does that particular skill contribute to the ultimate objective, winning a game at the lowest cost? Say, if the future foot speed of the player is guaranteed to be as good as it has been, how much the team should be willing to pay for the player? If the answer is known, the GM can then perform some arbitrage by selling players whose characteristics are overpriced and buying those whose characteristics are underpriced.

It may appear strange that those questions were not raised and addressed until after Billy Beane became the GM of Oakland Athletics in 1997. Apart from the philanthropic attitude of the team owners, there were other reasons why. Before the late 1970s, quantitative analysis of baseball data was both hard for the lack of computers and impractical because the players' salaries were not that high. Most importantly, the eventual adoption of quantitative performance evaluation methods revealed that the baseball data are extremely noisy. To extract some useful insights, one has to generalize from a large body of stats that no living scout or other baseball insider can keep in his head. Likewise, to see whether a given quantitative approach does (not) work, it's not enough to follow the career of a single player or observe the outcome of a single game.

That nourished the perception that quantitative metrics are more or less useless and recoursing to one's "internal compass" works better when it's time to draft players and then decide how (not) to use them during the game. An example of such attitude is the scouts' belief that "if you see it once, it's there", which is a ringing endorsement of making a decision based on the sample size of one. Given how much the outcome of anything that happens on the field depends on luck, that's a kiss of death for good scouting, or at least for a cost-effective version of it.

Undoubtedly, baseball teams vary in skill, but, according to the book, the contribution of skill to the outcome of an average game is about four times less than the contribution of luck. In particular, the number of games in playoffs is so small that luck doesn't cancel out in a series of five games, the worst team in the major league has a 15% chance to beat the best team. Because a team that loses in the playoffs cannot get the coveted World Series title it creates another psychological incentive for having little faith in the quantitative approach. To me it also means that if all of the noise were to disappear (and that's what "sabermetrics" is trying to achieve), the game would become far less fun to watch and talk about. There is not much thrill in observing how a slightly biased coin is flipped. Isn't that another reason why both the insiders and fans preferred to stick to the old ways instead of embracing the "performance scouting" and other insights offered by sabermetrics? If that's the case then The Club turns out to be far more rational and efficient than Lewis portrayed.

Next, I'd like to explore the most important point made by Lewis bad as they may have been, the baseball statistics were probably far more accurate than anything used to measure the performance of people in many other lines of work, so ...? What immediately comes to my mind are the "scouting" (hiring) practices of Microsoft and Google that included the so-called brainteaser interviews that were administered for 10 to 20 years (see Are You Smart Enough to Work at Google? and How Would You Move Mount Fuji?). To me it has always been clear that being good at brainteasers does not predict one's future job performance unless the job amounts to solving brainteasers. Both companies banned the practice in the end, even though some copycats are still lurking around. The point, however, is why it lasted for as long as it did. Apparently, the engineers at Microsoft and Google are no fools. They figured out that the brainteasers fail at achieving their purported objective many years ago. Why continue to use them, then? Moneyball provides a plausible explanation. Companies are not only about doing business but sometimes about being a certain social club. The club entry requirements can be as arbitrary as anything. If they appear, to put it mildly, irrational, that is to be expected every now and then. Therefore, the real question is not "Are you smart enough to work at Google?" but "Are you a good fit for the Google social club?". Regardless of what the answer is, it has nothing to do with one's intelligence or the absence thereof.

Now back to baseball. If you have some quantitative background I could highly recommend "Stein's Paradox in Statistics", a paper published by Prof. Efron in 1977 (incidentally, that was the year Bill James published his first Baseball Abstract). The rather ancient article is quite in line with what I learned from Moneyball the amount of noise in the baseball stats is substantial and the players are a lot more similar to each other than it appears to the public and even the insiders. It looks like my background in Statistics, combined with what I learned from the book, made it impossible to enjoy the game the way millions of fans do. Nevertheless, I managed to derive a lot of value from Moneyball and I wish you the same.
  • Very interesting book that flies by. It is so easy to read that you can almost pardon's Michael Lewis' penchant for perpetuating the hyperbole of others and contributing exaggeration of his own. You can easily see how the added flair and drama makes the book more interesting for a mass audience. You can also excuse the fact that the book doesn't actually point out the answer to the original question. Why were the Oakland A's able to win so many games on a small budget? It turns out that was a little bit of skill but mostly luck. They got lucky with their pre-moneyball pitchers Zito, Mulder and Hudson.

Despite the fact that Lewis doesn't highlight this anti-climactic conclusion on his own, the book still has enough information for the reader to get there. It is ironic that this parallels the reason Bill James' departed from Baseball Abstract and that is mentioned in the book. There is too much focus on the details that don't matter. The high level narrative and explanation are more important. Budget matters. You can get a slight advantage by exploiting inefficiencies but this takes a long time to prove out due to limited data points the out-sized impact luck has. There are lots of little nuggets of information like that hiding in this book that make it worth reading.
